For decades, Rwandans have been migrating to different parts of the world for a variety of reasons. Many have gained skills along the way, becoming doctors, entrepreneurs and IT professionals.

Recognising this potential, IOM launched a project in Rwanda to connect diaspora members with communities in Rwanda, with a specific focus on the health as well as technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sectors. As a result, more than 20 diaspora members travelled to Rwanda to engage with students and professionals in a unique immersive experience. The exchange is designed to be mutual, with both the diaspora members and local communities learning from each others’ experiences.

“I am Rwandan, and proud to be a Rwandan, which is the reason why I felt like sharing with my fellow Rwandans the skills and knowledge I acquired in Germany.” - Didier Mukiza, Rwanda and Germany, Electronics Technician

“When I learnt that Rwanda was looking for mental health personnel, it felt like a calling to make my mark. Sharing our experience does not mean that there are those below us, and that we are above them, but on the contrary, that there is equal sharing. They have things to teach us, and we have things to teach them, and together we can go far.” - Emeritha, Rwanda and Belgium, Psychiatric Nurse

“The experts who are coming as part of the diaspora are trained and experienced in many fields. When they come here, we, as professionals in Rwanda, benefit from that experience.” - Dr. Oreste Tuganeyezu, Rwanda, Director General, Gisenyi Hospital

Together, we can empower diasporas to contribute to development.

Help us provide other diaspora youths, professionals and organizations with the opportunity to partner with local communities in their countries of origin and work together to drive development forward.

Your contribution to the IOM Development Fund will help to empower and equip diasporas around the world to give back to their country of origin and replicate these programmes across the globe.
