In 2019, IOM Madagascar launched a pilot project to connect its diaspora with local communities on development initiatives. With an estimated 200,000 Malagasy nationals abroad, the diaspora represents a strong development potential for the country.

For several months, diaspora volunteers from France, the United States and Sweden worked with three host communities in Madagascar, leveraging their specific skills in IT, agribusiness, and international business to match the needs of the communities.

The success seen with this model - of connecting diaspora youth with local initiatives - has been replicated in other parts of the world, with plans to implement the project in Madagascar again.

“It was not my goal to change Madagascar on my own. I’m doing my part in Talata and the other volunteers are doing theirs in their assigned communities.  Each of us, little by little, contribute to the country’s development. Together, I believe we have the power and potential to make a difference.”  Harry, Madagascar and France

“We alone will not change the country but by working together, we have motivated one another to continue growing and giving back, each one of us as best we can.” Anais, Madagascar and France

“I wanted to participate in this programme to reconnect with my roots, the customs of my country of origin, and the Malagasy ways of being. At the same time, I also wanted to contribute to the development of Madagascar, as modest as my contribution may be.  I was filled with awe by the level of trust of the youth, the mutual support, and the openness that existed here.”  Lea, Madagascar and France

Together, we can empower diasporas to contribute to development.

Help us provide other diaspora youths, professionals and organizations with the opportunity to partner with local communities in their countries of origin and work together to drive development forward.

Your contribution to the IOM Development Fund will help to empower and equip diasporas around the world to give back to their country of origin and replicate these programmes across the globe.
